GASTRIC BALLOON
WHAT IS A GASTRIC BALLOON?
A gastric balloon is a medical device placed in the stomach to achieve weight loss. By reducing the volume of the stomach, this balloon allows the person to feel full with less food and increases the feeling of satiety. Thus, it reduces daily calorie intake. The gastric balloon is generally considered a suitable option for individuals who cannot lose weight or who avoid surgical intervention. It provides long-term weight loss and can help reduce obesity related health problems.
HOW IS A GASTRIC BALLOON INSERTED?
The gastric balloon is usually inserted in two ways:
Endoscopic method and
Swallowable method.
What is an Endoscopic Gastric Balloon? How is it Inserted?
An endoscopic gastric balloon is a balloon that is inserted into the stomach using an endoscope. During the procedure, the patient is given mild sedation and the endoscope device is advanced through the mouth into the stomach. The balloon is inserted into the stomach through the endoscope and inflated with saline solution. This procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes and the patient is discharged the same day.
What is Swallowable Gastric Balloon? How is it Done?
A swallowable gastric balloon is a capsule shaped balloon that can be swallowed with water. When the balloon reaches the stomach, it is inflated through a thin catheter. This method is less invasive than the endoscopic method and can usually be performed in an outpatient setting. The swallowable gastric balloon is a suitable option, especially for patients who do not want an endoscopy procedure.
AT HOW MUCH WEIGHT IS A GASTRIC BALLOON INSERTED?
The gastric balloon is generally suitable for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above. However, as each patient's situation is different, the suitability of the gastric balloon depends on the personal health condition and the doctor's assessment. In some cases, a gastric balloon may also be preferred for individuals with a BMI between 27-30 who have weight-related health problems.
HOW SHOULD NUTRITION BE AFTER GASTRIC BALLOON?
Nutrition after gastric balloon is very important for a successful weight loss process. In the first few days after the procedure, liquid and soft foods (boiled vegetables, purees) should be preferred. Over time, you can switch to solid foods (grilled chicken, fish, vegetables) but portions should be kept small. A balanced and healthy diet plan (protein, fiber, healthy fats) supports weight loss with the gastric balloon and ensures long-term success.
ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS OF GASTRIC BALLOON?
Gastric balloon may have some side effects. These side effects are usually temporary and occur within the first few days after the procedure. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and reflux. The side effects can usually be controlled with mitigating medications and decrease over time.
